Doing it by date means you can show that there was also some religious painting and some paintings of monkeys.feedback

There was once an expectation that every work should have a piece of text. People would say they won't know what to make of a work unless they were told A, B and C. But what if the label tells you X, Y and Z?feedback

It is probably of a prostitute in a seedy bed in Camden Town. She is naked, not nude. It's classic modernist English impressionism: lowly subject; dirty; urban; everyday.feedback

Gabo, a refugee from Europe, could see the sky glowing with the burning of Plymouth, 90 miles away from his home in Cornwall. So this was an explicit response, not just a historic coincidence, to make these perfect forms. It hasn't just been the Tate. There is something of an assumption that if you find two artists doing similar things then the woman will be the follower. And it is still easy to catch oneself talking in those terms. We say that Barbara Hepworth was married to Ben Nicholson far more often than we say that Ben Nicholson was married to Barbara Hepworth. Everything he does is negotiating that. How you do figurative painting in the age of photography? The sense of guilt, is in the work.feedback

He puts the figure in the centre, and all he draws in is the figure, and they're nearly always the same scale, so even when you move from a small canvas to a big canvas, the small canvasses are just heads. And there tends to be a relationship of where they are in the canvas. It depends how you hang it, but you feel as though there's eye-to-eye contact. The thing was, he didn't necessarily paint any of those - and yet he's sort of trying to get that feeling, that tension and apprehension, in his own images. There's a sense that just by owning images they somehow infected him.feedback
