The regional death gap has widened since 2008. If we do not acknowledge the role that poverty plays, poorer people will continue to suffer. If the Conservative party were a car, it would be in dire need of new tyres, having worn the treads bare with the sheer number of policy U-turns since this year’s snap general election. The reversal on funding rail electrification in the north and Wales is symbolic of the Conservatives’ contempt for the regions, and symptomatic of how Britain has prioritised the south even more under a Tory government. The south-east ravenously consumes infrastructure spending and political attention, with London as the capital for capital.feedback

Unlike the Kensington and Chelsea leader, Georgia Gould showed Camden residents that councils can have an accountable and human face. On Friday evening, outside Camden town hall, council leader Georgia Gould defended the decision to evacuate the nearby Chalcots estate due to safety concerns. Gould seemed genuinely worried, and told the BBC that Camden had been first in the queue to test its cladding, finding on Thursday that the panels fitted were “not to the standard that we had commissioned” and announcing they would be removed. At a public meeting the same night, Gould says residents raised other safety concerns she’d been unaware of: Camden council and the London fire brigade assessed the block, and the council was advised to evacuate.feedback

We know from past tragedies that fire safety costs money. But that shouldn’t matter when lives are at stake. The images from the Grenfell Tower disaster are harrowing, and immediately raise key questions for those responsible for the design and maintenance of the building. It will be some time before we know exactly how the fire started and the sequence of events that led to tragedy on such a scale. We do know that the rapid spread of flames, turning the building into a torch and filling the London skyline with smoke, was completely atypical of tower block fires, most of which are contained by designs which limit such a spread. Dany Cotton, London’s fire commissioner, stated that in her 29 years of service she’d never seen anything close to a fire of this severity.feedback
