I hope they had a great week. I hope they learned something while they were here, hope they got to know future teammates, hope that for the rest of the summer they do what we've instructed them to do, in terms of training and eating right and accelerate their development process. It's been nice to be able to be here and focus on these players that are here.feedback

If there is a deal there that makes sense, we'll move the player. If not, we'll keep him until we get to camp. We did really well in expansion ... so why don't we just see how they can do?”. Whatever you want to give us has to be better than what we can claim from that club. Then we're going to go to that club and say: 'We have interest in this player, there's another club that has interest in this player. How do we want to do this? How can we protect your roster? You can negotiate your way out of this if you wish.feedback

We think we can accomplish two things. We can put a good team on the ice and accumulate draft picks and be in a surplus situation here in the next couple of years so that we can start with a real good team and then build it with these draft picks to a team that can win a Cup.feedback

Most of the guys have been really forthright in what they want to do, who they'll probably expose and who they'd like to protect. And we're trying to find ways to accommodate each other. We won't be able to do that with everyone.feedback

Until we see everything, it's hard to know.feedback

It seemed the other day we go down to lunch, and I ran into a few GMs and the conversations started. It's been a busy week, but certainly productive.feedback

We're far enough along with a few teams that my plan is to sit on the phone all day Monday, Tuesday to see what we can accomplish. We've had some real good discussions, and I expect some things will start happening next week. The face of our franchise will be our logo. That's the way we're going to try and do things and be team-centric. We don't feel the need to go get names. It doesn't surprise me because of our relationship. But I don't think anything will be happening there. There's too many jerseys with No. 8 on them in the seats in Washington from moving that player.feedback

There's really only one way to build a successful N.H.L. team, and that is through a combination of strong drafting and development, effective trading and free-agent procurement. It's not about playing some stripped, sit-back style. Players don't enjoy that. They want to play a game where they have some freedom in how they can move and how they think. Hockey should never be boring. I wouldn't imagine they'd be ready for opening night. It's better to take your time developing players.feedback

Bill Foley will spend whatever we're allowed to spend to put a good team on the ice. He wants to win, and he paid half a billion for the franchise and has built a $30 million practice facility. So being able to spend to the cap is not an issue.feedback

I think you'd have to look at the team that we built in Washington. That's a talented team. It's got depth; it's got speed, good-character players. It has size. Really had some exceptional seasons. We'll do our best to assemble that kind of team.feedback

I was disappointed that people were pointing fingers at Alex. Because Alex does nothing but show up every year, produce at an elite level in the playoffs and in the regular season, hits like a truck and doesn't miss games, plays through everything. And I was disappointed that people were pointing fingers at him.feedback

I really feel bad for the franchise and for the players. It's turned into – as you know if you've been down there and to that building – such a fantastic hockey town, maybe one of the very best in the league. The support is incredible that they get. It was a tremendous gut punch [Wednesday] night, and just, boy, it's hard to find answers. And I felt for those players [Wednesday] night, I really did. They are a really good bunch of guys, talented guys. They're now veteran players, they've given everything they've got. ….feedback

You would hope the major tenants would get more support than this. You have to look after your teams.feedback

It's nice to be official; it was interesting the other day just at the trade deadline, talking to clubs in a real capacity again.feedback

Mar 05 2017

I would expect that in the weeks leading up to the expansion draft, there's going to be a lot of activity and we might make our first trade then.feedback

Mar 05 2017

I thought we were able to set the table with a few clubs, we had discussions with a number of clubs; with a handful of clubs, there was some clarity. We're not anxious to do many deals in advance -- we'd rather see the entire universe of who's available and who's protected before we make a lot of decisions.feedback

This isn't a fantasy league anymore. And I'm looking forward to the GM meetings. I've always taken those meetings seriously because the decisions we're making there affect the game not only at the NHL level, but all around the world. So, it will be interesting to see what people want to talk about and where people are going with things. I've been a bit out of the loop on some of that. Some GMs, like Doug Armstrong, would call and fill me in after recent meetings. But always better to be in them and have Vegas with a seat at the table.feedback
